Surabhi Arora

"Fire does not distinguish between a woman and a man.” These are words from Surabhi Arora, an IT professional, volunteer firefighter, and mother of two. Immigrating to America with her husband 23 years ago, her story is one of immense resilience and passion.

Eleven years ago, Surabhi's life was struck by tragedy when she lost her family back home in India to a devastating car accident. The grief she faced felt insurmountable and she found it incredibly challenging to move forward. It took years for her to regain her footing and discover new passions. With the help of her incredibly supportive sons and husband, she found solace and sought a sense of purpose—a purpose that could bring her peace while allowing her to give back to her community, a community that helped her at her lowest point.

Among her routines of fitness, running, and overall staying active, fate led her to an opportunity that would change her life's trajectory.

During one of her routine runs, a means to clear her mind, Surabhi noticed her local fire station seeking volunteers. Fueled by curiosity and a desire to give back to her community, she walked in, determined to explore the possibility of becoming a volunteer firefighter. Despite her initial doubts about her age, gender, or height being potential barriers, she found continuous support. Her inspiring approach reflects her belief that "It all depended on my attitude and aptitude."

Unfazed by obstacles, she took on rigorous physical and medical training. Despite the challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, she persevered, dedicating months to intensive studying and preparation. Finally, on November 30, 2020, she proudly earned her firefighter certification.

Acknowledging the scarcity of Indian firefighters in her community, Surabhi found support within the fire service and her kind-hearted community. While she recognized physical differences between herself and some male counterparts, her upbringing instilled a belief that no challenge was impossible for a determined woman.

Her initiation into firefighting came quickly—a call involving a car engulfed in flames. Surabhi received the hose opportunity, a pivotal moment that gave her many lessons to carry on her future calls. She expresses learning how important is to remain level-headed during a stressful situation, and though she made mistakes, she received unconditional support from her team.

She has emerged as an advocate for herself and aspiring female firefighters. To her, fire does not discriminate based on gender. "As long as you're well-trained, you can be as capable, if not more so, than any man."

Surabhi Arora transformed her tragedy into a driving force to keep fighting for those still around her, illuminating a path for others. She has proved that adversity can be overcome with determination, hard work, and a supportive community, irrespective of gender or background.
